Permits & Passes General Information on Commuter Benefits

Penn supports discounts for public transportation use by faculty, students, and staff

The University's commuter programs accommodate a variety of circumstances and include discounted, pre-tax purchases of commuter passes and cards that can be used for the robust network of transit systems that serve Penn's campus. Currently, full-time, benefits-eligible faculty and staff can receive discounted commuter fares or cards.  Up to $300/month of commuter fare costs may be paid for through pre-tax payroll deductions. Any monthly commuter transit orders that exceed $300/month will be considered a post-tax deduction.  All of Penn's Commuter Options are managed by Health Equity/WageWorks Commuter Services. Commuter orders (e.g., SEPTA COMPASS Key Card, PATCO, NJ Transit, Commuter Parking Card) must be placed by the 10th of the month prior to the commuting month you intend to use the pre-loaded funds or transportation fare products.

IMPORTANT:  SEPTA has retired the use of paper commuter passes from its transportation network.  Anyone participating in SEPTA's discounted program will need a SEPTA Key Card to travel throughout the transportation authority's systems.  This program offers a 10% discount on the monthly fare price and commuters receive significant pre-tax savings via payroll deduction.

Note: The commuter products supported by Penn and managed by Health Equity/WageWorks may differ from the retail transit fare programs offered by the participating transportation agencies such as SEPTA and NJ Transit.
