Full-time benefits eligible employees and post doctoral researchers and fellows receive a 50% discount (maximum $105) on most Philadelphia based regional transportation products.

Easy Online Enrollment

The Commuter Benefits program is managed by the University’s service provider, Jawnt. Enrollment is simple. To register for a monthly transit fare product, visit the Commuter Benefits portal using your PennKey, then enroll in the service of your choice. Passes purchased by the 19th of the month are effective on the first of the following month. For example, passes purchased by October 19 are effective November 1. Your elections will auto renew until canceled.

To register: 

  • Sign in to the Commuter Benefits Portal using  your PennKey and password.
  • Under Available Benefits, select your transit option(s) and click Enroll.
  • Follow the steps to complete Enrollment.

The following transit products are available.

 A monthly SEPTA Pass discounted at 50% may become and economical choice for employees commuting at least 3 days per week. Visit SEPTA for information about fare options.

Other Information for SEPTA Riders

A SEPTA Key Card is necessary for enrollment. Cards can be purchased at the SEPTA Kiosk located in the Penn Bookstore and SEPTA locations throughout Philadelphia. If you already have a SEPTA Key Card and utilize the SEPTA Travel Wallet, you will not be able to access funds in your SEPTA Travel Wallet as long as you also have a SEPTA Monthly pass. Therefore, you may wish to consider spending down any Travel Wallet funds currently on your Key Card before enrolling in the Commuter Benefits program and canceling any auto-reload settings that you may have enabled.

The Health Equity/Wage Works Commuter Card remains an option for full-time benefits eligible employees and post doctoral researcher and fellows at a 5% discount ($105 maximum) . Learn more and register here. NOTE: If you are registered for both the Commuter Card and a monthly pass the combined deduction amount for both products cannot exceed the $105 maximum.)

Riders of Penn Transit’s on-request shuttle services can use PennTransit Mobile to travel to, from and around campus.

All Penn Community members with PennKey credentials should download the app in order to submit a ride request.

The free app offers:

  •  Arrival estimates;
  • The ability to see Penn Transit’s fixed-route and on-demand options on one screen;
  • Integration of bike sharing and walking options; and
  • Commonly requested campus points of interest.
  • The ability to schedule a ride in advance;
  • Notification when the driver has arrived at the pick-up location; and
  • An option to request ADA-accessible vehicle.

Using a SEPTA Key Card to place your monthly commuter order for a transit pass can be accomplished in three simple steps. 

1. Buy a SEPTA Key Card ($4.95).

  • Key Cards are available at Station Fare Kiosks, Sales Offices, and Outlying Regional Rail Ticket Offices. Find one of these locations at www.septakey.org/info/buy-load-locator.
  • A SEPTA Key Card Kiosk is conveniently located at the Penn Bookstore, 3601 Walnut Street, ground floor.

2. Register your new Key Card. 

  • Create an account and register your Key Card by visiting www.septakey.org.
  • Make sure to take note of your Card Reference ID.
    • This number is NOT on your front-face of your Key Card -- it can be found by going to "My Account" page, selecting Card Options, then Card Reference ID. 
    • NOTE - the Card Reference ID is alphanumeric  and case sensitive.

3. Log in to your Health Equity/WageWorks account to link your Key Card using your Card Reference ID number

  • If applicable, cancel your current magnetic stripe pass order and change your pass election to SEPTA ComPass Key Card

 

 

Schedule information is available on PennRides en Route for fixed-route services such as Penn Bus East and West.  First, select your route from the left-hand navigation.  Then turn on the radio button for the service you wish to use.  To the left of the radio button, you will find a calendar icon.  Please click on that button to view the transit schedule and options associated with that particular route.  

Penn Transit operates an evening shuttle service, which provides transportation free of charge to and from campus pick-up locations to any address within the service boundaries. Faculty, staff, and students from Penn, and the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) may ride free of charge. Passengers need to show their institutional ID to board the shuttle and may bring up to two guests with them. Penn Evening Shuttles operate year-round except for Penn-recognized holidays.

The easiest way to access this service is to use the PennTransit Mobile app, a free rideshare app that can be downloaded from the App store or Google Play. You must have a PennKey and password to download the app. 

Riders can also call 215-898-RIDE/7433 to schedule a ride.

Hours of Operation

Penn Evening Shuttles operate seven days a week from 7:30 p.m. – 3:00 a.m., Monday - Friday and 6:00 p.m. – 3:00 a.m., Saturday - Sunday, with the following exceptions:

  • Shuttles that run east to a Center City location operate Monday – Friday 11 p.m. - 3 a.m. and expand service to 6 p.m. – 3 a.m. Saturday – Sunday.
  • A limited early-morning service from campus to off-campus locations is available from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. Service is not provided during that time to 30th Street Station. Riders may use LUCY service (Loop Around University City) to get to 30th Street Station from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. 

Helpful Hints for Using the Service 

  • All rides to and from campus must use designated pick-up and drop-off locations. If using the app, these locations are conveniently pre-defined in the app's drop-down menu.
  • A valid ride request for on-campus travel must be for at least a 1/2 mile.
  • Penn's Division of Public Safety's Walking Escort Service is also available to transit riders.

PennRides en Route offers passengers the ability to obtain real-time information about the locations and estimated arrival times of Penn Transit vehicles operating on fixed routes.  Services that operate on PennRides en Route includes Penn Bus East, Penn Bus West, the FMC Tower Shuttle, and Penn Rowing.

This system also features traffic alerts, such as emergency route or schedule changes. Information about vehicle stops, pick-up, and route information along with visibility to the areas supported by Penn Walking Escort Program is also available.

Enrollment in Penn's online commuter program is based on eligibility as a Penn full-time employee or Penn part-time-with-benefits employee in active status or on paid leave. Please review your status below to check your eligibility.

Full-time faculty and staff:

  • your payroll record has not yet been transmitted to WageWorks. Contact your Business Administrator (BA) to ensure when your Minimum Record was completed in the Payroll System. Records are transmitted to WageWorks on Tuesday evenings, but that's only if your record is completed in Payroll. You will be able to enroll based on the timing of record transmission.

Post-docs:

  • you are not eligible for this program. Contact the Office of the Vice Provost for Research for additional information.

Penn Schools/Centers/Departments can arrange for special parking for events and individuals by filling out our Special Event VIP Parking Request form.

Penn Parking Services makes every effort to clear all parking lots of ice/snow as soon as possible. During extreme snow conditions, Parking Services may ask permit holders in surface lots to park in the nearest garage to allow for an easier snow removal process.  Any changes to parking arrangements will be communicated to permit holders through email.  Please check your email prior to arriving on campus during a snow emergency.

Penn Parking Services is designating a portion of its parking spaces in our garages for Low Emission and Fuel-Efficient vehicles.

This effort, which is part of Penn’s Sustainable Transportation Initiative, is designed to support members of the Penn Community who to choose to drive low emission vehicles. The spaces are located near the entrance, exit or elevators as required and are clearly delineated by signage. They will be available to low emission and/or fuel-efficient vehicles only until 10 am each day. After 10 am, other permit holders or paying visitors can make use of these spaces.

Go to the nearest Transit Stop on Campus (shuttles & buses) or pick-up point (buses only)

Note: Shuttles may NOT be used to travel from one campus stop to another campus transit stop.

Step 2.

Wait Inside for Vehicle's Arrival

Wait inside the building if possible.  Have your ID ready to present to the driver.

Traveling from off-campus

Via Penn Shuttle Services

  1. Please call 215-898-RIDE (7433) to arrange for a shuttle to pick you up.
  2. Wait until the shuttle arrives before leaving your indoor waiting location.
  3. Need to go to another shuttle service area?

You must transfer at a campus transit stop to the shuttle serving your destination. For example, if you are in the West Shuttle area, but your final destination is 24th and Chestnut in the East Shuttle area, please call for the WEST Shuttle to you to any campus transit stop.  After you arrive at the stop, please wait for the East Shuttle to pick you up and take you to your final destination.

ON-CALL SHUTTLE

  1. To access the On-Call Shuttle, you must call 215-898-RIDE (7433). The on-call shuttle does not make regular scheduled pick ups on campus. Ride requests can be made for pick up from any campus transit stop or from any location in the off-campus service area

GROUP SHUTTLE SERVICES

  1. Penn Shuttle vehicles can hold up to 14 passengers.
  2. For groups larger than 14 passengers, please alert the dispatcher to the number in your party.
  3. Shuttles will be dispatched to accommodate the group as soon as possible.
