Room Retention

Room Retention is available for current residents of Three- and Four-Year Houses who are rising juniors and seniors interested in returning to their current room in their current College House and their prospective roommates. This includes Harrison, Harnwell, Rodin, Gregory, Du Bois, Stouffer, and Lauder College House.

Steps for Room Retention

Step 1: Make sure you are eligible and want to retain your room

  • If you live in and are interested in returning to a Program Community in any House, you should apply during the Program Community Process. Program Community beds cannot be retained.
  • If you want to return to the same College House, but choose a different room, you should apply to the Return to House Process.
  • You must be a full-time undergraduate student in a degree-granting program for Fall 2020.
  • All group members must be rising juniors or rising seniors.
  • You must be able to fill all the beds in your room with current house residents. Current roommates get priority so please discuss with them before bringing others in. The captain of the group needs to be from the desired room.
  • In addition to Program Community beds, freshmen, ADA, and single rooms are not eligible.
  • If you are interested in retaining a 5- or 6- person suite in Lauder College House, please review the additional instructions for those suites.

Step 2: Form a group

  • Form a group of up to 4 people. Since singles are not eligible, the minimum group size is 2.
  • Discuss with your group which group members will take which bedrooms. Students must be assigned to specific bedrooms within multiple-bedroom apartments and suites. This is particularly important for students retaining room types that contain both private and shared bedrooms, such as a 3 bedroom quad.
  • Students of any sex assigned at birth or gender identity can comprise a group if they all elect to be part of a Gender Inclusive Housing group, which may be selected on the application.
  • Select a Captain for your group.
    • The Captain must live in the room you are applying to live in.

Step 3: Complete the Room Selection Application and pay close attention to the Room Retention steps

  • Log on to MyHomeAtPenn between January 23, 9:00 a.m., and February 6, 1:00 p.m., to submit your application.
  • The Captain must apply first, create a group name and password, and share this information with group members. Group members must apply and join the group.
  • Once all members have joined, the Captain returns to the application to “Verify” the group. This step must be completed or the group will not be able to retain the room.
  • The group Captain will need to assign each member of the group to the desired bed. This needs to happen right after verifying the group.
  • You will not get a timeslot to select a room. By opting to retain a room, you are not eligible to select another room.
  • If more than one roommate tries to claim a room and bring in roommates, no one will be eligible to retain the room and you will be given a timeslot to select from available rooms during Return to House.
