Program Communities

This process is for students applying to Program Communities. Program Communities function as tightly-knit "theme floor" communities based around interests such as visual arts or science and technology. Any student new to or returning to a specific Program Community should make sure to complete the Program Community steps on the housing application.

Steps of the Program Community Phase of Room Selection

Step 1: Decide which Program Community is right for you

  • There are 3 types of Program Communities - Theme Communities, Student-Designed Communities and Course Communities.
  • Consult the Program Communities page to determine your eligibility, as some programs are only available to certain class years.

Step 2: Prepare your application

  • Many Program Communities require an essay.  Check the Program Community website to determine if one is needed.
  • If an essay is required, respond to the following questions using a maximum of 500 words:
    • Why are you interested in joining this Program Community?
    • What would your involvement bring to this program’s overall experience?
    • How have you participated in your current House community?
  • If you are applying to a Program Community, determine if you would like to request a roommate, but keep in mind that your roommate must also be accepted to the Program Community.
  • Students of any sex assigned at birth or gender identity can be roommates if they all elect to be part of a Gender Inclusive Housing group, which may be selected on the application.

Step 3: Applying to a Program Community

  • Log on to MyHomeAtPenn between January 23, 9:00 a.m., and January 27, 1:00 p.m., to submit your application.
    • For Program Communities, please make sure to include room type preference(s) and roommate requests on your application. When possible your preferences will be taken into account but are not guaranteed.

Step 4: Look for an email about your assignment

  • House Deans will review applications and make a decision regarding your acceptance and room assignment into a specific Program Community.
  • If you are not accepted into your first choice, the House Dean of your second choice will review your application and consider you for their program.
  • You will be notified by February 4 if you have been accepted into a Program Community and if so, what your room assignment will be.
