Residential Programs and Four-Year Houses

This process is for students applying to Residential Programs in the high rises or Kings Court English House, and for students applying to join or return to a Four-Year College House. Residential Programs function as tightly-knit "theme floor" communities based around interests such as visual arts or science and technology. The Four-Year College Houses (DuBois, Gregory, Stouffer, and New College House) foster communities similar to Residential Programs. Any student new to or returning to a specific Residential Program or Four-Year College House should apply during the Residential Program and Four-Year Houses Process.

Steps of the Residential Program and Four-Year Houses Process

Step 1: Decide which Residential Program or Four-Year House (Du Bois, Gregory, Stouffer, or New College House) is right for you

Step 2: Prepare your application

  • The Four-Year Houses have unique application and assignment processes. Check with the House Office or the House website for specific application information. You must also complete the application at MyHomeAtPenn.
  • Many Residential Programs require an essay.  Check the Residential Program website to determine if one is needed.
  • If an essay is required, respond to the following questions using a maximum of 500 words:
    • Why are you interested in joining this Residential Program?
    • What would your involvement bring to this program’s overall experience?
    • How have you participated in your current House community?
  • If you are applying to a Residential Program, determine if you would like to request a roommate, but keep in mind that your roommate must also be accepted to the Residential Program. If you are applying to a Four-Year House, you will not be able to request a roommate through the application on MyHomeAtPenn. If you are applying to a Four-Year House and would like to request a specific roommate, please contact the House Dean of the Four-Year House in question.
  • Students of any gender can be roommates if they all elect to be in gender neutral housing.

Step 3: Apply for the Residential Program and Four-Year Houses Process

  • Log on to MyHomeAtPenn between January 17, 9AM, and January 22, 5pm, to submit your application.
    • For Residential Programs, please make sure to include room type preference(s) and roommate requests on your application. When possible your preferences will be taken into account but are not guaranteed.

Step 4: Look for an email about your assignment

  • House Deans will review applications and make a decision regarding your acceptance and room assignment into a specific Residential Program or Four-Year House.
  • If you are not accepted into your first choice, the House Dean of your second choice will review your application and consider you for their program.
  • You will be notified by January 30 if you have been accepted into a Residential Program or Four-Year House as well as your room assignment.
